Our Work

Work from the animation studio Washington DC teams can show to any audience.

Every frame this animation studio Washington DC clients commission is original. No stock assets, no recycled characters and no template packs that turn up in another organization's video. The selection below leans toward the work closest to a Washington brief: teaching, explaining and onboarding rather than selling. For long-form public education, see our educational animation series work, and for staff and member training, our guide to explainer videos for employee onboarding.

Industries We Serve

Washington does not buy animation to sell. It buys it to explain.

The Washington metropolitan area counted more than 6.3 million people at the 2020 Census, and its buyers sit in three jurisdictions: the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. An animation studio Washington DC organizations rely on has to brief four very different sectors, and almost none of them is trying to sell a product. They are explaining a program, a policy, a capability or a finding to someone who did not ask to learn it.
01

Federal agencies and public programs

Benefit enrollment, program awareness, rule changes and internal workforce training are the core of this sector. The Plain Writing Act of 2010, signed on October 13, 2010, requires federal executive agencies to use plain writing in the documents they issue, and the same expectation now shapes their video. A script that a member of the public cannot follow on first viewing has failed, however accurate it is.

An animation studio Washington DC program offices work with has to write for that standard: short sentences, defined terms, one idea per scene and a tone that informs rather than persuades. Animation suits this work because the same project can carry caption files, a transcript and a clean voiceover track, and because motion graphics for data and process show eligibility rules or a timeline far faster than a page of text. Our usual route into federal work is through the communications firms and contractors that hold the agency relationship.

Program explainersRule and policyWorkforce trainingPublic awareness
02

Associations, trade groups and advocacy

K Street is shorthand for this sector, and the American Society of Association Executives itself is headquartered at 1101 K Street NW. Trade associations, professional societies, nonprofits and think tanks fill the District, and international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank keep their headquarters a few blocks apart in the same city.

Association briefs reaching an animation studio Washington DC members groups trust tend to be member value videos, annual meeting openers, issue explainers written for members and Hill staff, and continuing education modules. Each one is reviewed by a board, a committee or a policy team, sometimes all three. Nonprofit and development work adds donor and impact storytelling, where a program on another continent has to feel real to a reader in Arlington or Alexandria.

Member valueIssue explainersAnnual meetingDonor and impact
03

Government contractors and defense technology

This sector lives mostly outside the District. Lockheed Martin is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Leidos, SAIC and General Dynamics are in Reston, Virginia, Northrop Grumman is in Falls Church, and many defense contractors cluster in Arlington near the Pentagon. Capital One's headquarters campus is in Tysons, and Amazon's second headquarters, HQ2, is in Arlington.

The corridor that holds those firms briefs an animation studio Washington DC contractors use for capability videos, proposal and orals support, trade show loops and recruiting. Much of what they build cannot be photographed at all, either because it is software, because it is still a design, or because showing the real thing is not permitted. Animation shows the system as a clean abstraction, and 3D animation for systems and hardware or a corporate explainer video gives a capability a shape a review panel can remember.

Capability and proposalSystems visualizationTrade showRecruiting
04

Public health, research and life sciences

The National Institutes of Health campus sits on Rockville Pike in Bethesda, and the FDA's headquarters is the White Oak campus in Silver Spring, Maryland. Around them is a research and regulatory ecosystem of institutes, universities, patient groups and life sciences companies across Montgomery County and beyond.

An animation studio Washington DC research teams hire is asked for mechanism of action, study recruitment, patient education and the plain language summary of a finding. Accuracy comes before polish, and public audiences need the science without the jargon. We build clinical, patient and public versions from one asset library. See our healthcare explainer video and medical device explainer video work.

What We Produce

Five formats, one Washington animation partner

A policy explainer, a member video and a capability piece for a proposal rarely need the same format. An animation studio Washington DC buyers can brief across all five saves them from managing three vendors for one campaign. This animation studio Washington DC teams brief produces every format in house, so the format is chosen on what your audience needs rather than on what a studio happens to sell.

01

2D animation

Custom characters and environments for public programs, member campaigns and patient education. A character gives a benefit or a rule a human face without casting a real person who might read as partisan or dated. Nothing is built from stock libraries. See our 2D animation studio.

02

Motion graphics

Animated charts, kinetic typography, process maps and interface walkthroughs. The right choice for policy data, eligibility rules, budget figures and any subject where clarity beats character, and usually the most cost efficient format to produce. More on our motion graphics services.

03

Explainer video

A complete 60 to 90 second piece built to make one program, product or finding understood in a single viewing. Script, voiceover, animation and sound design included, with the price published rather than quoted on our explainer video pricing page. An explainer takes 3 to 4 weeks from approved brief to final file. See explainer video production.

Anime animation

Genuine Japanese anime visual language, frame by frame, for youth outreach, recruiting and brand campaigns that need to stop a scroll. None of the Washington studio pages we reviewed in search results offers it. Quoted per finished minute. See our anime animation studio.

Specialist work
05

3D animation

Systems visualization, hardware, devices and molecular or cellular processes. It is the format Northern Virginia contractors and Maryland life sciences teams ask an animation studio Washington DC side for most, because it shows the inside of things that cannot be filmed. A separate production pipeline, always quoted individually. See 3D animation.

Why Magic Motion Studio

What we do differently from other animation studios

We are not based in Washington and we do not pretend to be. What separates this animation studio Washington DC teams can hire remotely from the usual shortlist is how the work is priced, reviewed and handed over. Here is each difference.

Explainer pricing published, no quote wall

Every explainer plan and every inclusion is listed on the pricing page. A program manager can check whether we fit the budget line before a single meeting goes on the calendar.

Most studios"Contact us for a quote", a wait, a discovery call, then a number that was never in your range

Approval gates built for multi-office review

Script, storyboard and animation are approved separately, so program staff, counsel, communications and your accessibility reviewer each see the work while changes are still cheap. An animation studio Washington DC reviewers sign off on has to plan for more than one approver.

Most studiosOne review at the end, when every comment means re-animating finished frames

Caption files, voiceover and transcripts

We deliver caption files, a clean voiceover track and a transcript with the finished video, so your team has the materials its own accessibility review needs. They are planned from the script stage, not bolted on after delivery.

Most studiosBurned-in subtitles added at the end, with no separate caption file or transcript

100% original assets, no templates

Every character, environment and icon is built from scratch for your organization. Public audiences notice when an agency video uses the same stock character as a mattress commercial, and that costs trust you cannot buy back.

Most studiosStock character libraries and template packs reused across dozens of clients

You own everything on delivery

Full ownership transfers on final payment. No licensing fees, no annual renewal and no restriction on where the video runs, which matters when a program video has to live on a public site for years.

Some studiosLicense the video to you rather than sell it, with a recurring fee or usage limits

Remote, with no office mark-up

Animation is produced, reviewed and delivered on screens. A downtown address adds rent to a quote without adding anything to the video, and this animation studio Washington DC buyers hire charges the same in the District, Maryland and Virginia.

What this means for youEvery review happens on a shared screen with the work in front of you, so feedback lands on the frame
Our Process

From brief to broadcast-ready in 5 steps.

Every project follows a structured five-phase workflow refined over 10+ years of production. Each phase has defined deliverables and a client approval gate. For Washington clients we add one thing: a named review slot at the storyboard stage for counsel and your accessibility reviewer, so this animation studio Washington DC teams brief never animates a scene that has not cleared every office.

01 / 05
01

Strategy and Script

We define the messaging first: your audience, the one message that drives action, the tone and the call to action. Then we write the full script in plain language, with every figure sourced. A weak script produces a weak video regardless of animation quality.

02

Art Direction and Storyboard

Our art director sets the visual style guide, then produces a full storyboard showing every scene and transition. Program, legal, communications and accessibility reviewers all comment here, before any animation begins, which removes expensive revisions later.

03

Voiceover Recording

Runs in parallel with art direction, not after it. You choose from three to five professional voice samples matched to your brief. Recorded in a treated studio and delivered as a broadcast-quality WAV that becomes the timing track.

04

Animation Production

Every scene built from scratch, frame by frame or rigged depending on the style. Lip sync on every speaking character and motion curves adjusted by hand. A senior animator checks each scene against the storyboard.

05

Sound Design and Final Delivery

Licensed music, sound effects timed to motion and mastering to broadcast loudness. You receive the video in 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16, with caption files, a clean voiceover track and a transcript. Full rights transfer on payment.

Pricing

What animation in Washington actually costs

None of the Washington studio pages we reviewed publishes a price, so most buyers find out at the end of a discovery call. Asking an animation studio Washington DC organizations shortlist what a video costs should not need a meeting, especially when you are building a budget line or a proposal cost volume. Both explainer video plans are listed in full on our pricing page. Everything else is quoted on the brief within 24 hours. The same fixed rates apply in the District, Maryland and Virginia.

PlanWhat is included
StandardOne complete 60 second animated video. Script, storyboard, custom animation, professional voiceover, sound design and revisions, all included.
ProEverything in Standard, plus 60 to 90 second runtime, five revision rounds, social resizes, cutdowns, animated GIFs, still images and source files.
3D animationQuoted per project because 3D runs on a separate rendering pipeline with different cost drivers.
Series and longer runtimesPer minute cost falls once characters and environments are built, because those assets carry across every episode.

Nothing is added later. Any animation studio Washington DC buyers compare should put that in writing. No licensing fees, no renewal fees and no charge for the caption files or source files you already paid to have made. Anime is quoted per finished minute and covered on our anime animation studio page. The full factor by factor breakdown is on our explainer video pricing page.

Buyer's Guide

Seven questions for any animation studio in Washington, including us

Ask every animation studio Washington DC has on your shortlist the same seven. Compare the answers, not the showreels. A showreel shows highlights, not how your review cycle will run.

Will you show me the price before a call?

An animation studio Washington DC buyers approach that will not state a range until it has qualified your budget is pricing you, not the project. Association and program budgets are set months ahead, so a published number is worth more here than almost anywhere.

Red flag

"Contact us for a quote", a wait, a discovery call, then a number that was never in your range.

Where we stand

Both explainer plans published in full. You can build the budget line tonight.

What accessibility files do you deliver, in writing?

Ask for the list in the proposal, not on a call. Caption files, a transcript and a clean voiceover track are what your own accessibility reviewer will ask for. Be wary of any vendor that calls itself "certified" for accessibility: there is no official Section 508 certification for a vendor, and conformance is judged on the finished content by the organization that publishes it.

Red flag

Burned-in subtitles only, or a certification claim with nothing specific behind it.

Where we stand

Caption files, voiceover and transcript delivered with the video, ready for your review.

Who owns the files when it is finished?

Ask directly, and ask whether editable source files are included. Some studios keep the project files and charge an export fee when a rule changes and the video needs updating. Others license the video rather than sell it, with a recurring fee you only discover at renewal.

Red flag

Ownership is not mentioned in the proposal, or source files appear as an upsell.

Where we stand

Full ownership on delivery. No licensing or renewal fees. Source files on the Pro plan.

Is voiceover and sound design inside the price?

This is where cheap quotes hide. Voiceover casting, direction and recording, plus sound design and a music mix, often appear as a separate line item. A quote without them is not a cheaper video, it is an incomplete one.

Red flag

Audio listed as "optional" or "client supplied" anywhere in the scope.

Where we stand

Included at both plan levels. Script, voiceover, sound design and music.

How many revision rounds, and what happens after?

With several offices reviewing, this question matters more in Washington than anywhere. Unlimited revisions is either untrue or priced in somewhere you cannot see. A fixed number of rounds at each stage, with consolidated feedback from your side, is the honest structure.

Red flag

"Unlimited revisions" with no definition anywhere of what counts as one.

Where we stand

Fixed rounds at every stage. Scope changes are flagged before they are billed, never after.

Have you worked in my sector before?

A federal program, a trade association, a defense contractor and a research institute each carry their own vocabulary and review culture. An animation studio Washington DC clients hire to learn their sector on their budget will take longer and get it wrong more often. Ask to see two projects close to your own, not the general reel.

Red flag

Every example shown is a consumer ad, with nothing that teaches or explains.

Where we stand

1,000+ videos across education, healthcare, software, finance and manufacturing.

Can I see the script and storyboard before animation?

Any animation studio Washington DC organizations hire that animates before you approve a storyboard is setting up an expensive argument with your counsel. Approval gates are the only point where changes are still cheap. Changing words costs nothing. Changing finished frames costs weeks.

Red flag

The first thing you are shown is a near-finished animation.

Where we stand

Script, then storyboard and style frames, both approved before a single frame is animated.

Question 01 of 07

Washington Animation Heritage

Washington has been commissioning animation since 1942

Washington is not a studio town in the Hollywood sense, and it never needed to be. It has been one of animation's most important clients, and every animation studio Washington DC organizations hire today works in that tradition. For more than eighty years, the federal government and the city's broadcasters have used drawn characters to explain taxes, safety and civics to the whole country.

1942

Released in January 1942, The New Spirit was produced by Walt Disney at the request of Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr., to encourage Americans to pay their income tax for the war effort. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary. A decade later the Federal Civil Defense Administration funded Duck and Cover, whose animated Bert the Turtle was selected for the National Film Registry in 2004.

The city made its own media too. Jim Henson created Sam and Friends while a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park, and it aired on WRC-TV from 1955 to 1961. It was puppetry rather than animation, but it included a prototype Kermit, and in 2010 the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History accepted the original Kermit from Jane Henson. In the mid-1970s, I'm Just a Bill taught a generation how a bill in Congress becomes law. The Library of Congress now preserves animation alongside live action through the National Film Registry, which inducted Gertie the Dinosaur in 1991.

Washington buyers inherit that habit. They expect animation to teach, not just to sell, and an animation studio Washington DC teams hire is judged on whether a stranger understands the idea after one viewing.

Areas We Serve

An animation studio Washington DC wide, and across Maryland and Virginia

Washington's buyers sit in a district and two states, a region locals call the DMV (the District, Maryland and Virginia). Animation is produced digitally and reviewed on a shared screen, so an animation studio Washington DC organizations engage remotely can serve a Capitol Hill association and a Reston contractor on identical terms. Pricing never changes by jurisdiction. See the wider Washington metropolitan area. Along the East Coast we also run hubs for animation in New York and animation in Boston.

Common Questions

Hiring an animation studio in Washington DC, answered

Still have a question after this? Email info@magicmotionstudio.com and we reply within 24 hours.

Explainer video pricing is published in full on our explainer video pricing page, both plans, factor by factor, so you can build a budget line without a call. Every other format, including 2D character work, motion graphics, 3D and anime, is quoted on the brief and we reply within 24 hours.

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. This animation studio Washington DC clients use works remotely. Animation is produced on screens, reviewed on screens and delivered as files, so a District address adds rent to your quote without adding anything to the video. Reviews run on a shared screen with the work in front of every approver, wherever they sit.

Yes, through the right route. As an animation studio Washington DC contractors can bring onto a team, we work directly with associations, nonprofits, research groups and contractors, and as the animation partner to firms that hold federal contracts. In that arrangement the prime contractor or communications firm manages the agency relationship and we produce the animation to their brief, review schedule and accessibility requirements.

As an animation studio Washington DC teams use for public video, we deliver caption files, a clean voiceover track and a transcript with every video, which give your team what its own accessibility review needs. Section 508 applies to federal agencies, and the Revised 508 Standards, in effect since January 18, 2018, adopt WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA. For prerecorded video that means captions, and also audio description, which should be scoped separately. There is no official vendor certification. Conformance is confirmed by your own reviewers.

Usually, because an animation studio Washington DC teams brief should write expecting several reviewers. We source every figure in the script, keep claims inside what your program can support and flag anything that reads as a promise or a projection while it is still words on a page, when changing it is free. The storyboard stage then gives every office a second look before animation starts.

Yes. We write in plain, accurate and balanced language, direct the voiceover to inform rather than persuade, cite figures to their source and avoid imagery that reads as loaded or as a caricature of any group. If a sentence would sound different to readers on either side of an issue, we flag it at script stage for your team to decide.

Four sectors cover most Washington briefs: federal agencies and public programs, associations, trade groups and advocacy organizations, government contractors and defense technology firms in Northern Virginia and Bethesda, and public health and research teams around NIH and FDA. Each briefs an animation studio Washington DC buyers hire very differently, so we write each one in its own register.

An explainer video takes 3 to 4 weeks from approved brief to final file. That covers scripting, storyboard and style frames, animation with voiceover and sound design, then revisions and delivery. Character animation, 3D and anime are scheduled per project, because the timeline depends on length and complexity, and you get that schedule with your quote.

No. Whether you are on Capitol Hill, in Bethesda, Silver Spring, Arlington, Alexandria or Tysons, this animation studio Washington DC clients hire charges the same. Location does not change what it takes to produce animation, so it does not change what we charge.
