Anime Trailer Formats Explained

Five anime trailer types. One studio for all of them.

Quick Answer
Anime trailer production, called PV (Promotional Video) production in the industry, covers five distinct formats used across series marketing, game launches, crowdfunding campaigns, and VTuber debuts. Each format serves a different purpose: a Teaser PV builds hype with minimal content; a Main PV introduces characters and tone; a Character PV spotlights a single cast member; a Motion Manga PV animates existing artwork without drawing new animation; and a Game Anime Announcement Trailer delivers a full cinematic sequence for game reveals. A professional anime trailer production studio chooses the right format for your campaign stage and budget, then executes it with frame-by-frame animation rather than motion graphics or AI generation.
Teaser PV
15-30 sec

The shortest and earliest-stage anime trailer format. Released at initial announcement to signal that a project exists and build an audience before production is complete. Shows the visual style, tone, and at most one or two characters. Dialogue is rare. Music drives the entire piece. Used in early Kickstarter campaigns, Twitter/X announcements, and convention reveal panels. A Teaser PV does not need a finished script. A visual identity and a music track or sound design concept are sufficient to begin production.

First announcementCrowdfunding launchConvention reveal
Main PV / Full PV
60-90 sec

The full-length anime promotional trailer that introduces the cast, setting, conflict, and emotional stakes. Structured like a condensed anime opening: character reveals, world shots, action beat, emotional beat, and a final title card. Released 4 to 8 weeks before a series launch or crowdfunding campaign close. This is the format most anime audiences share on social media and the one that drives the most pre-orders and subscriptions. A Main PV requires approved character designs and a music track or detailed music brief before storyboarding begins.

Series launchStreaming pitchCrowdfunding close
Character PV
30-60 sec

A single-character focus trailer introduced one at a time across a marketing campaign. Used extensively in game marketing to spotlight playable characters, and in series marketing to build individual character audiences before premiere. Each Character PV reuses the same animation style and music theme with character-specific motifs. For game clients, Character PVs are often produced as a series, typically 4 to 8 per campaign, with consistent production design across every release, making per-unit cost lower than standalone trailers.

Game character revealSeries cast spotlightSocial media campaign
Motion Manga PV
60-120 sec

The most cost-effective anime trailer production format. Existing manga or webtoon panels are animated using kinetic camera movement, parallax depth, speed lines, impact effects, and panel transition effects, without drawing new character animation. The result is a professional promotional video that uses your existing art as its visual base. Sound design, voice clips, and music are added in post. Motion Manga PVs are the standard promotional format for manga and webtoon crowdfunding campaigns. See our full manga animation studio service for extended manga production options.

Game Anime Announcement Trailer
60-120 sec

A full cinematic anime-style animated sequence for game reveals and launch campaigns. Distinct from in-game cutscenes: the announcement trailer is a standalone piece produced to the quality standard of a professionally produced anime opening. Used in game showcase events, Steam page headers, and convention reveal panels. Game anime announcement trailers are the highest-visibility format for reaching anime audiences at launch. Delivered in formats compatible with all major game store pages, streaming platforms, and YouTube.

Not sure which format?

The right anime trailer type depends on your campaign stage, existing assets, and budget. A Teaser PV costs less and moves faster. A Main PV converts more viewers into supporters. A Motion Manga PV requires no new character animation. We advise on format selection as part of the written quote process. No calls required.

Who We Produce Anime Trailers For

Every campaign that needs an anime trailer.

Anime trailer production is not limited to broadcast series with studio backing. Any project with anime-style characters, a defined world, and an audience launch date is a candidate for a professionally produced PV.

Crowdfunding Campaigns

A professionally produced anime trailer is the single highest-converting asset in a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign for anime, manga, and game projects. Crowdfunding campaigns with an animated Teaser PV or Motion Manga PV launch with a visible audience artifact rather than a pitch deck. The trailer communicates production quality, artistic vision, and commitment to the project before a single backer pledges. A Teaser PV can be produced and delivered in 2 to 4 weeks, fast enough for pre-launch planning. See manga animation studio for manga-specific campaign options.

Game Launches and Reveals

Anime-style games, including visual novels, JRPGs, action games, and mobile titles, use anime trailer production to reach the anime audience on Steam, console storefronts, and social media. A Game Anime Announcement Trailer converts immediately on game store pages where thumbnail-level visibility is driven by the quality of the launch trailer. Character PV series build ongoing audience engagement through a game's marketing window. We produce game anime trailers at a quality standard recognizable to audiences who compare them to professional studio output.

Streaming Platform Pitches

A professionally produced Main PV is the standard submission asset for independent anime pitches to streaming platforms and distribution partners. Pitching an original anime series requires demonstrating production quality in motion. Static key visual art is not sufficient. A 60-to-90-second fully animated Main PV showing your characters, world, and tone is the minimum production proof required for serious acquisition conversations. We produce pitch PVs to broadcast standard: 1080p or 4K, ProRes delivery, full IP ownership transferred to the client.

VTuber Debut and Milestone Trailers

VTubers use anime trailer production for debut reveals, milestone celebrations, and lore-expansion campaigns. A debut Teaser PV builds audience before the first stream. A Main PV released at a subscriber milestone introduces extended lore and character backstory to an established audience. A Character PV campaign reveals a group of VTubers across a coordinated launch. See our dedicated VTuber animation studio page for full VTuber-specific production scope and delivery options.

Manga and Webtoon IP Proof-of-Concept

A Motion Manga PV or fully animated Teaser PV transforms a static manga or webtoon into a moving proof-of-concept that demonstrates adaptation potential to publishers, licensing partners, and streaming platforms. A moving trailer based on your manga panels functions as an adaptation pitch without requiring full episode-length animation. This is the fastest route from existing artwork to a professional promotional asset, and using your panels as source material reduces production scope significantly compared to animation drawn from scratch.

Series Announcements and Season Reveals

Original anime series running on YouTube, streaming platforms, or convention circuits use anime trailer production to announce new seasons, new arcs, and major character reveals. A new-season Main PV reactivates an existing audience and acquires new viewers through the shared clip economy on Twitter/X, Reddit, and YouTube. For established series, a Teaser PV released at a convention panel generates immediate clip traffic before the full trailer arrives. We produce series continuation trailers matching the visual language of your existing production.

How We Produce Anime Trailers

6 stages. Fully async. Ships on deadline.

The anime trailer production pipeline at Magic Motion Studio runs from brief to delivery without calls. Every format, including Teaser PV, Main PV, Character PV, Motion Manga PV, and Game Anime Trailer, follows the same 6-stage structure adapted to trailer type and runtime.

01

Brief, Format Selection, and Reference

Day 1

Submit your project brief covering: campaign type (crowdfunding, game launch, series announcement, etc.), characters and world, target platform, hard deadlines, and existing assets (character art, manga panels, or existing animation). If you are unsure which trailer format fits your campaign stage and budget, format recommendation is included in the written quote. We advise based on your deadline, asset availability, and intended use. No calls required. A written quote is returned within 24 hours.

Written quote returned within 24 hours.
02

Music and Sound Decision

Day 1-3

Music drives anime trailer production timing at the frame level. Before storyboarding begins, we establish whether you have a finished track, a rough demo, a reference track, or will use sound design only (for Teaser PVs). Trailers storyboarded without a music reference risk timing drift across 30 to 90 seconds of cuts. For Motion Manga PVs, sound design alone, including atmospheric music, impact effects, and voice clips, is often sufficient. We do not produce or license music. Music provision or direction is the client's responsibility.

03

Storyboard and Shot List

Week 1-2

A complete storyboard is produced for all frame-by-frame formats (Teaser PV, Main PV, Character PV, Game Anime Trailer). Every shot is planned against the music timeline, annotated with camera direction and character action, and delivered as a PDF for written approval before animation begins. Motion Manga PV production uses a shot list rather than a drawn storyboard, showing panel selection, camera movement paths, and transition effects. Changes at this stage carry no additional cost and do not delay the production timeline.

Structural changes after storyboard approval may affect scope and timeline.
04

Animatic Review

Week 1-2

The approved storyboard is assembled into a timed animatic with your music or sound reference. The animatic shows exact cut timing, pacing, and scene flow. For short Teaser PVs, the animatic and storyboard stages may be compressed into a single review cycle. For Main PVs and Game Anime Trailers, a full animatic review is mandatory before key animation begins. This is the last checkpoint for structural changes at zero cost. Motion Manga PV production skips the animatic and proceeds directly to the motion compositing stage after shot list approval.

05

Key Animation, Motion, and Compositing

Week 2 onwards

For frame-by-frame formats, key animation is produced in Clip Studio Paint and composited in Toon Boom Harmony. Background art is painted to match the animation. For Motion Manga PVs, the approved manga or webtoon panels are composited in After Effects and Premiere Pro with parallax depth layers, kinetic camera movement, speed lines, and impact effects. No new character animation is drawn. Color grading, title card animation, and credit overlays are added in the compositing stage for all formats.

06

Music Sync, Final Export, and IP Transfer

Final Delivery

Final delivery is at 1080p or 4K in H.264 MP4 and ProRes formats. Platform-specific exports for YouTube, Kickstarter, Steam, and streaming platforms are included. Audio is synced to the final music or sound design track and exported at platform-standard loudness normalization. Source files (Toon Boom Harmony, Clip Studio Paint, After Effects) are transferred on request. Full intellectual property ownership transfers to the client on final payment. No licensing clauses, royalty agreements, or usage restrictions.

Rush delivery available for crowdfunding launch dates and convention deadlines.
What Great Anime Trailers Teach Us

Four anime trailers and what they prove about production.

The most effective anime trailers in the industry are each case studies in a specific production decision. What worked, why it worked, and what it means for the anime trailer you commission.

Violet Evergarden
PV1: Kyoto Animation, 2018
Emotional tone first
Violet Evergarden's first PV, produced by Kyoto Animation, contained almost no plot information. In under two minutes, it showed light through windows, a letter being written, and a character's mechanical hands. No antagonist was revealed. No conflict was named. The PV communicated tone, visual quality, and emotional register, and it was enough to generate significant pre-release audience interest and industry attention. This is the model for Main PVs designed to reach audiences who have not read the source material. When your IP is original or unknown, a trailer that communicates mood and production quality converts better than one that over-explains plot. The anime audience evaluates trailers on visual fidelity and emotional resonance before story. A 60-second PV that looks and feels like quality professional anime production outperforms a 90-second plot summary with lower production quality.
Production lesson
Communicate tone before plot. For original IP, a Main PV brief should define how the audience should feel at the end of 60 seconds, not what story information they should have received. Magic Motion Studio's storyboard process is built around emotional arc, not information delivery.
Studio: Kyoto Animation, Format: Main PV (60-90 sec)
Solo Leveling
Anime announcement PV: A-1 Pictures, 2024
Manhwa to anime adaptation
Solo Leveling's anime announcement PV, released before the A-1 Pictures series premiered, faced a unique challenge: it was adapting a manhwa (Korean webtoon) with an existing global audience who had strong visual associations with the source art. The announcement PV had to deliver the manhwa's aesthetic in a new animated form without alienating readers while acquiring new anime-only viewers. The PV succeeded by leading with the most recognizable visual signature of the source, Sung Jinwoo's design and the dungeon blue-glow palette, before revealing any new animation techniques. The first 10 seconds contained nothing new audiences hadn't seen in the manhwa. This established trust before demonstrating production expansion. For any manga or webtoon adaptation, the first trailer must serve the existing fanbase first and new audiences second. Losing the source audience in a trailer is a production failure regardless of animation quality.
Production lesson
For manga and webtoon adaptations, the existing fanbase is the trailer's primary audience. At Magic Motion Studio, Motion Manga PVs deliberately feature recognizable panels before introducing new animated sequences. Trust before expansion. The same principle applies to full animated adaptation trailers.
Studio: A-1 Pictures, Format: Anime Announcement PV
Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)
Theatrical teaser: CoMix Wave Films, 2016
Music-only teaser architecture
The theatrical teaser for Your Name (Kimi no Na wa), directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films, was structured around music and environment rather than character or plot. The teaser showed Japanese landscapes, trains, light through leaves, and the two leads in brief glimpses, with no dialogue, no conflict introduction, and no plot explanation. The music by RADWIMPS carried the entire emotional argument for the film. The teaser worked because it communicated what the film felt like, not what it was about. This is the definitive example of a music-first teaser production approach: the music track was selected and the entire visual content of the teaser was built to serve it. No image in the trailer competed with the music. Every cut either reinforced the musical mood or gave the audience visual breathing room. For clients producing a Teaser PV, this is the benchmark: 30 seconds, no dialogue, music doing all the narrative work.
Production lesson
For Teaser PVs, the music is the trailer. The visuals serve the track, not the other way around. Magic Motion Studio's teaser production requires a music reference or track before storyboarding, not as an optional input, but because without it the storyboard cannot be built correctly.
Studio: CoMix Wave Films, Format: Theatrical Teaser PV
Demon Slayer: Hinokami Chronicles
Game anime announcement trailer: CyberConnect2 / Aniplex, 2021
Game anime trailer benchmark
The announcement trailer for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Hinokami Chronicles is the clearest benchmark for what a Game Anime Announcement Trailer can achieve when the animation quality matches the source IP. The trailer, produced to the same animation quality standard as ufotable's television series, was shared more widely than any gameplay footage because it functioned as a standalone piece of Demon Slayer content rather than a game advertisement. This is the distinction between a game anime trailer that converts anime audiences and one that does not. Anime audiences do not share game trailers. They share anime content. A game announcement trailer that achieves anime production quality circulates through anime fandom channels before it circulates through gaming channels. For indie game studios producing anime-style titles without the Demon Slayer license, the production lesson is identical: the trailer must be worth watching as an anime clip, not just as game marketing.
Production lesson
A game anime trailer must be worth watching as anime, not just as advertising. At Magic Motion Studio, game anime announcement trailers are produced to the same frame-by-frame standard as a series PV, not to a lower commercial production standard. The target audience evaluates the trailer as anime content first, game content second.

01

A Dedicated Anime Trailer Production Studio: Not a Generalist

Every competitor ranking for anime trailer production searches is a generalist studio. Pixune Studios, Prolific Studio, and Elderwood Animation produce commercial and corporate animation, game trailers, explainer videos, and motion graphics across multiple styles. Anime-specific trailer production, including PV format expertise, frame-by-frame quality, and music-sync storyboarding, appears in none of their portfolios as a named specialization. Magic Motion Studio produces only anime and anime-adjacent work. The five PV formats covered on this page are not a menu item alongside corporate video. They are the only thing we produce.

02

Frame-by-Frame for the Formats That Need It. Motion for the Formats That Don't.

Not every anime trailer format requires frame-by-frame animation. A Motion Manga PV does not draw new character animation. It animates existing panels. A Teaser PV at 15 seconds may prioritize atmosphere over character movement. A game trailer may use a single extended action cut. Understanding which production approach serves which trailer type is expertise that generalist studios don't have and don't need. At Magic Motion Studio, format selection and production approach are advised as part of the written quote, not upcharged as consultation fees.

03

Full IP Ownership. No Licensing on Campaign Assets.

Every client who commissions anime trailer production from Magic Motion Studio receives full intellectual property ownership on final payment. This matters especially for crowdfunding campaigns: a Kickstarter trailer used commercially, shared virally, or sublicensed to a distribution partner cannot carry licensing clauses from the production studio. The trailer belongs to the campaign. No attribution requirements, royalty agreements, or usage restrictions of any kind are attached to any project this studio delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anime trailer production questions answered.

What is anime trailer production (PV)?
Anime trailer production, known in the industry as PV (Promotional Video) production, is the process of creating a short animated video that introduces an anime series, game, or original IP to its target audience. PVs are the standard promotional format in the anime industry and range from 15-second teaser clips to 90-second full trailers. A professional anime trailer production studio handles the complete pipeline: storyboard, animatic, key animation, compositing, music sync, and final delivery.
Magic Motion Studio produces five types of anime trailers: Teaser PV (15-30 seconds, minimal footage, hype-first); Main PV or Full PV (60-90 seconds, character introductions, action and emotional beats); Character PV (30-60 seconds, single character focus for game and series campaigns); Motion Manga PV (animates existing manga panels with parallax, camera movement, and speed lines, without drawing new character animation); and Game Anime Announcement Trailer (60-120 seconds, full cinematic anime-style sequence for game launches). Format selection is advised as part of the written quote at no additional cost.
Production timelines vary by trailer type. A Teaser PV (15-30 seconds) takes 2 to 4 weeks. A Main PV or full anime trailer (60-90 seconds) takes 4 to 8 weeks. A Character PV (30-60 seconds) takes 3 to 5 weeks. A Motion Manga PV takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on panel count and complexity. A Game Anime Announcement Trailer (60-120 seconds) takes 5 to 10 weeks. Rush delivery is available for fixed launch dates, crowdfunding campaigns, and convention deadlines. For full production cost context see our anime animation pricing breakdown and our anime animation cost guide.
No. A full script is not required before commissioning an anime trailer production. What is required is a project brief covering your characters, world, tone, target audience, and intended use (crowdfunding, game launch, streaming pitch, etc.). For Teaser PVs, a mood board and reference anime trailers are often sufficient. For Main PVs and Game Announcement Trailers, a shot list or rough storyboard concept accelerates the production timeline. We provide storyboarding as part of the production pipeline, not as a separate service.
All clients receive the final rendered anime trailer at 1080p or 4K in H.264 MP4 and ProRes formats, optimized for their target platform. Platform-specific exports for YouTube, Kickstarter, Steam, streaming services, and convention screens are included. Toon Boom Harmony and Clip Studio Paint source files are transferred on request. Full intellectual property ownership transfers on final payment with no licensing clauses or usage restrictions. An anime opening animation can be commissioned alongside a trailer as part of a combined production package.
