What Is an Anime Opening

90 seconds. ~1,080 frames. An entire world.

Quick Answer
An anime opening animation is a 60-to-90-second title sequence produced with frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation, original music, and a structured 7-beat narrative arc that introduces the series, its characters, and its emotional stakes. The industry standard runtime is 90 seconds. At 12 unique drawings per second ("on twos"), a 90-second anime opening requires approximately 1,080 individual hand-drawn frames. A professionally produced anime opening animation studio delivers the complete sequence: storyboard, animatic, key animation, in-betweening, background art, color, compositing, and sound sync.

Why anime openings are a distinct production discipline

Anime openings are not trailers. They are not title cards with motion graphics layered over them. A genuine anime opening animation is a complete piece of frame-by-frame animation designed to be experienced as a standalone creative work. Audiences rewatch them independently of the show. They become cultural artifacts: Cowboy Bebop's "Tank!", Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood's "again", Demon Slayer's "Gurenge", Jujutsu Kaisen's "Kaikai Kitan" are all as iconic as the series themselves.

The production discipline for an anime opening differs from episodic animation because the sequence carries full expressive weight in 90 seconds, without dialogue. Every cut is choreographed to music. Shot timing is measured in frames, not seconds. Frame-by-frame animation is non-negotiable: puppet rigs and motion graphics read immediately as non-anime to anyone who has seen three episodes of any series.

Magic Motion Studio produces anime opening animation for original IP owners, gaming studios, VTubers, YouTube show creators, and indie film producers using Toon Boom Harmony and Clip Studio Paint. The process is the same as a professional animation studio pipeline, scaled for independent and small-team IP owners.

What the 7-beat anime OP structure means for your project

The 7-beat structure is not a formula. It is the pacing architecture that trained anime audiences expect and that creates emotional payoff within 90 seconds. Deviating from it is a creative choice, not a production shortcut. The beats on the right represent the conventional architecture. Your opening will be storyboarded against your music track and may adapt any of them.

90s
industry-standard anime OP runtime. Shorter variants (60s) exist but 90s is the dominant broadcast format.
The 7-beat anime OP structure
  • 1Cold open / musical hook · 0-6s. Title card or abstract image over the opening bar. Sets tone before anything is shown.
  • 2Title card sequence · 6-12s. Series title animated to the first vocal hit or musical peak.
  • 3Character reveals · 12-45s. Main cast introduced with motion, pose, or action signature.
  • 4World and setting · 30-55s. Environment, tone, and scale of the story's world.
  • 5Action beat · 50-75s. High-energy cut sequence or signature fight / power reveal.
  • 6Emotional beat · 68-82s. Slower cut showing relationship or stakes. Contrast to action.
  • 7End freeze · 82-90s. Final pose or image held over last bar. Leads into episode cold open.
Who We Produce Anime Openings For

Every format that needs an anime opening.

Anime opening animation production is not limited to traditional broadcast series. Any project with a named cast, a fictional world, and an audience that watches anime is a candidate for a fully produced OP.

Original Anime Series

Self-produced or crowdfunded anime series at any stage, from pitch pilot to second season launch. We produce the full OP to broadcast standard: 90-second runtime, 1080p or 4K delivery, music sync included. Used for YouTube series, streaming submissions, and festival pitches.

Game Anime Openings

Anime-style game titles routinely use full anime opening sequences as their title screens. We produce game anime openings for indie titles, visual novels, RPGs, and mobile games. Delivered in formats compatible with Unity, Unreal, and web players. See our anime animation studio for game project examples.

VTuber Opening Animations

VTubers use anime openings as debut trailers, channel intros, and anniversary releases. A frame-by-frame VTuber OP introduces your lore, model, and persona to a new audience in the exact visual language they expect. See our dedicated VTuber animation studio page for scope and examples.

YouTube Anime Shows

YouTube original anime series increasingly open with full anime opening animation sequences. A produced OP signals production quality before a single line of dialogue, increases watch time, and drives rewatch behavior. Produced for recurring YouTube shows with 2 or more episodes per season.

Manga and Webtoon Adaptations

An anime opening animation is the fastest way to demonstrate that your manga or webtoon is worth adapting. A 90-second OP showing moving characters, voiced action, and music functions as a pitch reel for distributors, licensing partners, and publishing deals. We handle character adaptation from static panel art to animation-ready models.

Indie Film and Short Series

Indie anime films and short series (2-6 episodes) use opening animations to establish visual identity, signal production values, and create a branded moment that audiences remember. An anime trailer serves the marketing function; the OP serves the audience experience. Both can be produced for the same project.

Production Pipeline

7 stages. 6 to 10 weeks. One complete OP.

The anime opening animation studio pipeline at Magic Motion Studio follows the same 7-stage production structure used by professional Japanese animation studios, adapted for independent and small-team IP owners. Everything is async. No calls required.

Stage 1: Brief, Music, and Reference

Day 1

You submit your project brief covering: series or project title, cast of characters, setting and tone, target platform, and your approved or in-progress music track. A music track or detailed music brief is required before storyboarding begins because all shot timing is locked to the track. Reference anime openings are requested to calibrate style, pacing, and camera language. We do not produce or license music.

Written quote returned within 24 hours of brief receipt.

Stage 2: Character Design and Style Frames

Weeks 1-2

Character turnaround sheets and key expression references are produced in Clip Studio Paint. Manga and webtoon clients receive characters adapted from panel art to animation-ready designs with simplified line weights and consistent construction. Style frames are produced for 2-3 representative scenes before full storyboarding begins. Written approval is required to advance to Stage 3. Revision rounds at this stage do not impact the timeline.

Stage 3: Storyboard

Week 2

A full shot-by-shot storyboard is drawn against the 7-beat OP structure. Every cut is planned, timed to the music track in frames, and annotated with camera direction, character action, and transition style. The storyboard is the contract between design intent and production. Changes requested after storyboard approval may affect scope and timeline. The storyboard is delivered as a PDF with timestamps for each scene.

Stage 4: Animatic

Week 2-3

The approved storyboard is assembled into a timed animatic with the music track. The animatic shows exact cut timing, pacing, and scene flow before a single production frame is drawn. This is the most important revision checkpoint: structural changes to shot order, scene additions, or timing adjustments are made here at zero cost. After animatic approval, production animation is locked to this structure.

Last checkpoint for structural changes before key animation begins.

Stage 5: Key Animation

Weeks 3-6

Frame-by-frame key animation is produced in Clip Studio Paint. At "on twos" (12 unique drawings per second), a 90-second anime opening requires approximately 1,080 key and near-key frames. Held frames and limited action sequences reduce this count; complex action sequences with multi-character fight choreography increase it. Key animation is the longest stage in the pipeline and drives the overall project timeline.

Stage 6: In-betweening, Cleanup, Color, Background Art, and Compositing

Weeks 6-9

In-between frames are drawn to complete motion arcs, then cleaned to final line quality. Color is applied against the approved color design. Background environments are painted to match the animation's perspective and lighting. All layers are composited in Toon Boom Harmony with effects, overlays, and any typographic elements including the title card. The composite is reviewed against the animatic for timing accuracy before export.

Stage 7: Final Export, Sound Sync, and IP Transfer

Week 9-10

Final delivery is at 1080p or 4K in H.264 MP4 and ProRes formats. Platform-specific exports for YouTube, streaming platforms, and convention screens are included. Sound is synced to the final music track and exported at -14 LUFS normalized to streaming platform standards. Toon Boom Harmony and Clip Studio Paint source files are transferred on request. Full intellectual property ownership transfers to the client on final payment. No licensing clauses, royalties, or attribution requirements.

Rush delivery available for fixed launch dates and convention deadlines.
What the Best OPs Teach Us

Four anime openings and what they prove about production.

Every famous anime opening animation is a case study in a specific production decision. Understanding why these sequences work, technically and aesthetically, is what separates a studio that can produce yours from one that can only reference it.

01
Cowboy Bebop
"Tank!" · Yoko Kanno / The Seatbelts, 1998
Music-first production
Cowboy Bebop's opening, produced by Sunrise, was built around "Tank!" before any visual storyboarding began. Director Shinichiro Watanabe approved the music track and then built every shot to the specific rhythmic and tonal events in the composition. The result is a 90-second sequence where each visual cut, from silhouetted poses to falling playing cards to rotating gun barrels, lands on a specific musical beat rather than approximating the rhythm in post-production. This is the correct production order for any anime opening animation: music first, storyboard second, animation third. Storyboarding against a reference track rather than the finished music produces animation that drifts off beat by 2-4 frames across a 90-second cut, a mistake that is visible to trained eyes and expensive to fix in compositing.
Production lesson
Approve your music track before storyboarding begins. Every Magic Motion Studio OP is storyboarded against the locked music track to prevent frame-level drift. We require an approved track or a detailed music brief with reference examples before Stage 3 begins.
Studio: Sunrise
02
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
"Gurenge" · LiSA, 2019
2D / 3D hybrid compositing
Demon Slayer's Season 1 opening, produced by ufotable, is the most technically cited example of 2D/3D hybrid animation in the medium. The Hashira rotation sequence and the water breathing effect sequences use 3D geometry to generate baseline motion paths, which are then redrawn in 2D in a process ufotable calls "digital-cel animation." The 3D base provides consistent perspective under extreme camera movement that would be prohibitively expensive to achieve in pure 2D. The result does not look like CG. It looks like hand-drawn animation because it is: the 3D pass is the underdrawing. Every frame you see was redrawn by hand. This technique is distinct from standard 2.5D compositing where 3D elements are combined with 2D in post-production without being redrawn.
Production lesson
Hybrid 2D/3D production is not a shortcut. It is more labor-intensive than pure 2D for complex action. Inform your studio what camera movement and action complexity you want before production begins. At Magic Motion Studio, scope is costed against actual frame count and complexity, not runtime alone.

03
Jujutsu Kaisen
"Kaikai Kitan" · Eve, 2020
3D base modeling + OP direction
Jujutsu Kaisen's Season 1 opening was directed by Shingo Yamashita, one of the most respected anime opening directors working today. The sequence is notable for its use of rough, expressive line work that deliberately breaks from the clean production of the main series, creating a visual contrast that signals the OP as a distinct artistic statement. The Gojo reveal sequence in particular uses 3D model-based blocking for camera tracking before the 2D redraw pass. Yamashita's approach demonstrates a key production principle: the OP director's vision is distinct from the series' main animation director. An anime opening animation is a separate creative brief, not a compressed episode preview. The shots chosen for an OP do not need to be literal scenes from the story. They are the emotional argument for why the audience should watch.
Production lesson
An anime OP is a creative statement, not a trailer. At Magic Motion Studio, the storyboard phase treats the OP as a standalone piece with its own visual logic, not a compressed version of your pilot episode. The brief you submit should describe how you want audiences to feel, not just what plot points to preview.
Studio: MAPPA · OP Director: Shingo Yamashita
04
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
"again" · YUI, 2009
Character reveal architecture
FMA Brotherhood's first opening, produced by Bones, is the most studied example of character reveal architecture in the medium. In 90 seconds, the sequence introduces 14 named characters with distinct poses and personality signatures without dialogue or text labels. Audiences leave knowing exactly who is ally and who is antagonist from visual language alone. The opening was storyboarded to deliberately withhold certain characters until later in the season, replacing them in OP 2, 3, and 4 as the story progressed. This is the model for how an original series anime opening should communicate worldbuilding: through character composition, color coding, staging, and motion signature rather than exposition. The OP's character lineup is a cast introduction with zero words. This technique works only if the character design is strong enough to carry it, which is why character style frames precede storyboarding in the Magic Motion Studio pipeline.
Production lesson
Character design must be locked before storyboarding begins. The power of a well-produced anime OP depends entirely on the visual distinctiveness of each character. Magic Motion Studio's Stage 2 character design and style frames are mandatory approval checkpoints before Stage 3 storyboarding, not optional steps.

An Anime Opening Animation Studio, Not a Generalist

Every competitor ranking for "anime opening animation studio" searches is a generalist video production company. Animotions Studio and Zozrus Studio produce commercial explainer videos and motion graphics in multiple styles. Anime is listed as a style option among dozens of others. No anime opening credits appear in their portfolios. Magic Motion Studio produces only anime and anime-adjacent work. The difference is visible in the production pipeline, the tool selection, and in every frame of output.

02

No AI Generation. No Rigged Puppets Marketed as Anime.

Anime opening animation produced with AI generation tools or rigged puppet systems is immediately recognizable to any audience that has watched more than one episode of any series. The movement quality is different at a structural level: a rigged puppet cannot produce the overlapping action, the weight, or the squash-and-stretch that frame-by-frame drawing generates. Magic Motion Studio uses no AI generation tools and no puppet rigs on any anime opening project. Every frame is drawn by hand.

03

Full IP Ownership. No Licensing Surprises.

Every client who commissions an anime opening animation from Magic Motion Studio receives full intellectual property ownership on final payment. This means no licensing agreements, no royalty clauses, no attribution requirements, and no usage restrictions of any kind. You may broadcast it on streaming platforms, exhibit it at anime conventions, submit it to distributors, or sublicense it as part of a larger IP deal without any further engagement with this studio. IP ownership is not an upgrade. It is the standard delivery agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anime opening production questions answered.

What is included in an anime opening animation?
A complete anime opening animation from Magic Motion Studio includes storyboard, animatic timed to your music, key animation drawn on 2s and 3s in Clip Studio Paint, in-betweening and cleanup, background art, color design, compositing in Toon Boom Harmony, and final delivery at 1080p or 4K. Full IP ownership transfers to the client on final payment.
A professionally produced 90-second anime opening animation takes 6 to 10 weeks from approved brief to final delivery. This covers storyboard and animatic review (1 to 2 weeks), key animation (2 to 4 weeks), in-betweening, cleanup, color, and compositing (2 to 3 weeks), and final export and delivery (3 to 5 days). Rush delivery is available for fixed launch or convention deadlines.
Anime opening animation uses frame-by-frame key animation drawn on 2s — 12 unique drawings per second — producing approximately 1,080 individual hand-drawn frames for a 90-second OP. Regular 2D animation at comparable cost often uses rigged puppet systems where pre-built character parts are moved rather than redrawn. The difference is visible and immediately recognizable to any anime audience. See our frame-by-frame anime animation service for a detailed breakdown of the technique.
Yes. An approved music track or detailed music brief must be provided before animatic production begins, as all shot timing and music sync is built around the track. We can work with a finished track, a rough demo, or a reference track if the final music is still in production. We do not produce or license music as part of the animation service.
All clients receive the final rendered animation at 1080p or 4K in H.264 MP4 and ProRes formats, exported for their target platform. Working source files (Toon Boom Harmony project files, Clip Studio Paint files) are transferred on request. Full intellectual property ownership transfers on final payment with no licensing clauses or usage restrictions. For production cost context see our anime animation pricing breakdown and our anime animation cost guide.
You do. Full intellectual property ownership transfers to the client on final payment. No licensing agreements, usage fees, royalty clauses, or credit requirements are attached. You may use the animation commercially, sublicense it, pitch it to distributors, or modify it without restriction.
